The county has many cultural attractions and is home to a number of well known theatres, galleries and sculpture parks. Yorkshire’s National Media Museum and Magna Centre celebrating science adventure are unique to the county and entertaining for all the family. Similarly, the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield provide a setting in which 4 galleries present the very best in arts, craft and design. York is an important cultural centre dating back to its Viking heritage. The Jorvic Viking Centre is one of Britain’s top visitor attractions outside London, and has led onto the new architectural venue ‘Dig’, also in York.
Kids who love outdoor activities and adventure activities will feel at home in Yorkshire. For family entertainment Dalby forest houses an award winning high wire adventure where participants are fitted with harnesses and given expert tuition. Horse riding trails are popular with all age groups and skill levels, and coupled with England’s most stunning scenery this is a truly idyllic way to spend a day. The coastline provides ample opportunity to try out watersports with Scarborough providing the waves and beach to combine sandcastles with surfing.
For the more adventurous there are rock climbing, mountaineering and caving trips aplenty with fully qualified instructors on hand. All abilities are welcomed and catered for, from beginner to advanced including tuition and guidance for those with special needs. For those wishing to try out extreme sports normally associated with the Alps, Yorkshire is now a leading (indoor) location for activities such as ice-climbing, snowboarding and skiing.
The North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales are the perfect settings for the family to discover the tranquillity and magnificence of England’s greenest county. On ground level the National Parks provide the backdrop for quality family time with guided walks to help you explore and appreciate the breathtaking countryside. For those whose pace is suited more to cycling, Yorkshire provides some of England’s most exhilarating mountain bike trails and conversely some of the most peaceful country lanes and cycle paths through which to potter gently and admire the scenery as a family.
Perhaps from a child’s perspective one of Yorkshire's truly greatest assets is its seaside towns and the attractions that go with them. Bridlington has miles of golden sand stretching far into the distance for the perfect beach break, whilst the county also has an area known as the Dinosaur Coast which provides endless enjoyment for all the family searching for fossils.
